Second Life Subscription Boxes – A list of loot!

Shopping can be difficult on Second Life. While some stores gather on the same sim to create a ‘mall’ of sorts, its still far from a real world shopping experience where you can visit all of your favorite stores in one place. On SL, you have to know what you’re looking for. This can be exhausting, especially for people who don’t have the time.

To solve this problem, Subscription Boxes that mimic the real life trend have made their way to the virtual grid. For a flat fee, every month or so (depending on the box) you will receive an entire package of goods to check off your shopping list all at once. Everything from frills and bows to home decorations are covered in the list below. And to make it better, many of the items are exclusive and made by top designers across the grid.

Deco(c)rate

Deco(c)rate consists of 15 home and garden items in a new theme each month. Everything from buildings, furniture, decorations and landscaping have been known to make their way into the box. These items are semi-exclusive, meaning after a month the item can be sold in the designers store – but you’ll still be among the first to have it! This box is released on the 8th of the month and costs $1500L before the 8th, or $3000L after its released.

BishBox

BishBox consists of 15 clothing and accessory items for the “wild and crazy grrrls of Second Life”, as their website explains. This box is released on the 20th of each month, and costs $1500L before the 20th, or $3000L to purchase after the box is released.

Luxe Box

Luxe Box is the box for chic, glamorous girls. You can find anything from clothing, shoes, hair, and even some decor. For $1500L preorder you will get 12 items from top designers across the grid. You can also purchase the box after the release for $3000L.

Cutie Loot

Cutie Loot is a new Kawaii themed subscription box. While only one box has been released so far, it received rave reviews from the adorably cute collection of clothing, hair, and accessories in the Kawaii fashion. This box is released on the 8th of each month and is $1500L to preorder, $3000 after release.

Powder Pack

Makeup is no exception to the subscription box trend. This box, or boxes, consist of 12 appliers for the Catwa or Lelutka mesh heads. Catwas packs are released on the 17th of the month, and Lelutka on the 1st. This box costs $1500L to preorder or $3000 after release.

Treasure Chest

The Treasure Chest is dedicated to the Role Players of Second Life. You’ll find a collection of 12 fantasy items from clothing to accessories, decor and more. The box is $1500L and releases on the 15th. You can purchase it for $3000 after release.

Builder’s Box *NEW

This box has yet to be released, but as their description states it is a  “box packed full of nothing but homes, skyboxes & other builds from 10 great creators”. It will be $2000L for preorder or $3000L after release. Pre-orders for the first box open on April 15th, 2017.

Women Impersonating Men In Second Life

Are you sure that he is really a “he”?

Let me please preface this with the fact that the opinions I express are solely my own. Additionally, I encourage you to read this in its entirety before you form your own opinions so you’ve had a chance to absorb some perspective.

But yes, we are here today to discuss the popular existence of “real life” women whose Second Life characters appear to be men. For years Second Life was notorious for the large population of “real life” males that would choose female characters and otherwise living as females in Second Life. While there was a healthy number of people who are actually transgender and actively transitioning in “real life” (thus, utilizing Second Life as a great outlet for this) there were many that would keep their “real life”gender identity a secret or simply mislead, while carrying on relations(hips) in Second Life with a partner none the wiser.

Nowadays, it’s pretty common knowledge that if someone’s “real life” gender matters to you when it comes to someone you are interested in, one of the first things you should do is have a conversation with them on voice. If someone insists they can’t speak on voice (no mic, don’t have privacy etc) then it’s a good rule of thumb to be cautious and not get too involved until they can voice-verify. They may have a “real life partner they’re not disclosing, or are not being honest about their “real life” gender identity.

But, I digress. There was always a stigma among women to prove they were women and not “a man in disguise” by men who were interested in them. Having to say “voice verified” (which isn’t really a verification process in SL, by the way) or “can voice verify” became the norm in a lot of profiles. Men started reverse searching the “real life” pictures women would share to make sure they weren’t being catfished or tricked by another man before jumping on a pose ball.

However, male avatars weren’t always held to the same level of scrutiny.

Now, there are many “real life” women who choose to exist in Second Life with male avatars or masculine female avatars and are 100% transparent about it. That’s not even an issue, and I appreciate the honesty. But there seems to be a quiet growth of women who impersonate men simply because they know it would be easier to land a date as a man rather than as a woman.

While this might seem counter-intuitive, I had been in that exact situation with someone that I had always suspected was actually female outside of Second Life. Mind you, as someone who essentially has a non-preference sexually, it didn’t really matter to me. But they didn’t realize this and carried on like they were actually male offline. They sent pictures of someone that I was easily able to see wasn’t them (thanks, Google reverse searches) and ultimately when I insisted on meeting offline so I knew  I wouldn’t be wasting time, they bolted. It was almost two years later before they would admit the truth.

While this could have easily of been  singular instance, it’s far from that. And while some of the “red flags” should make it obvious, some women get into relationships in SL with people that won’t verify for the same reasons some women wouldn’t verify that they were actually women.

Second Life is supposed to be a place where you can be anything you want to be, and that is what makes it beautiful. But, on the flip side, is there a code of ethics? Are we responsible for making sure that we’re honest about our “real life” selves?

I have actually heard arguments on both sides of the fence, but I boiled it down to a very simple opinion:

If you are investing offline feelings, or someone is investing the same in you, you better fess up. From personal experience it can only go so far until you have to either face it or walk away, and either can leave you by yourself if you haven’t been honest. Don’t carry on being someone or something you are not if it comes from a place of needed a void to be filled or otherwise avoiding loneliness in a manipulative way.

Is It Infidelity? Micro-Cheating in Second Life

Are you micro cheating?

The evolution of technology has led us to some pretty unfamiliar territory when it comes to how we behave outside of our relationships, how we find love and how we can start veering in the the “infidelity” territory. When it came to cheating, it used to be a lot more cut and dry than it’s become today. There was physically cheating, and then there were emotional affairs. It was, in its own way, uncomplicated.

But then, the phenomenon of micro cheating emerged.

Micro cheating is, in a nutshell, much that is inappropriate for you to do when you are already in a relationship. This can include flirting (even if just online), getting excited when you see someone’s name pop up on your timeline or friend’s list, posting things on social media hoping “someone” will see it, purposely liking photos and posts of an ex, and hiding your phone. The idea behind micro cheating is that it can be a gateway to actual cheating….a cheating stepping stone, if you will.

Now we have a slew of ways we can talk to people without our significant other being aware: social media, texting, Skype, even Craigslist if you’re that eager. It’s easier to discreetly plan out no-strings situations and move on with your life with a blissfully unaware (or intentionally blind) partner back at home. It gives us access to ex’s, to strangers, and to always keep options open if you get seduced into the “grass is always greener” mindset through the plethora of swiping opportunities.

And then, we have Second Life, this beautiful and boundless space that we all share. It is a massive world filled with incredible diversity and……plenty of people that are unhappily spoken for in the real world.

You often see people who clearly state that they are taken in real life, but will blatantly try to talk to you in a non-platonic way. Sometimes there’s nudes they try to share, or they simply want you to grace them with your presence when they log. Sometimes folks seek out sexual “encounters”. In some way shape or form they will seek out the attention of people that coax that interest out of them.

Since roleplay is such a huge part of this virtual space, so comes the opportunities to roleplay as families and with virtual partners. While many keep it online and make no plans to take it offline, more often than not there are genuine feelings that are developed. So, unless this is something that you’ve openly discussed with your real-life partner and they’re comfortable with, welcome to the world of micro cheating.

Micro cheating isn’t fully recognized as cheating as much as it is this grey area between being faithful and not….and a tempting stepping stone for many to take it to a dangerous level. It can lead to texting, sexting, inappropriate calls and video chats, or even that ultimate form of betrayal: meeting in person. But, the most dangerous part of it all, honestly, can be the fantasy of falling in love and truly believe that it’s real.

Now, believe me when I say I wholly support the possibility of genuinely finding your perfect other half in Second Life. Just like dating offline, you never know when you will come across someone that you fully click with and decide to explore those feelings with. However, JUST LIKE REAL LIFE, if you start that venture in a shaky situation, it’s probably not going to end well.

Micro cheating in Second Life often can lead to or involve very unhealthy behaviors, such as a partner who is possessive (to the point where they do not respect that you already have a S/O), neglecting the relationship you should be focusing on instead, or even interfering with your social life and free time. I have witnessed many a person fall head first into a virtual relationship that managed to nearly drown in record speed.

In the end, we’re all adults here and can “play” this “game” any way we choose- but in the end, micro cheating in Second Life is a surefire way to create a destructive path to nothing worthwhile.

11 Ways to Make Money in Second Life

These days there is plenty to buy in Second Life as creators continue to extend their talents, providing an incredible array of options to decorate our space and dress our avatar. However, its understandable that at times it can be a bit difficult to support this hobby, and we may not be able to become as immersed as we want.

The beauty of Second Life is that it is based on its very own economy, which means there are plenty of ways to make money on Second Life so that you never have to upload a single dollar again. Don’t be fooled! Just like real life, earning Lindens takes some hard work and investment. But if you’re dedicated, you can build an empire.

Become a CSR

If you have time to spare and are looking for a job, many creators in Second Life rely on Customer Service Representatives to help run their brand. If you think you’d enjoy fielding questions and helping people navigate a store or how to buy an object, CSR may be a good position. These jobs often require set working hours, but allow you to go about your SL and simply take requests through IM. Some may require that you be in store to greet people as they come by.

Blog

Bloggers make money through Sponsors. The most popular kind of blogging is fashion blogging, or taking a picture of what you’re wearing and sharing with your audience. The same can be done with decorating. Creators of the items you feature may sponsor your blog in the form of free items or Lindens for promoting their items. The more popular your blog is, the better chance it has to get sponsored – so don’t be discouraged if it takes a while for your first sponsorship to roll along. This can take a while! Blogs are free to start through WordPress.com, Blogger.com, or Tumblr.com.

Use your Talents

Can you sing? Play an instrument? Maybe you are an excellent painter, or perhaps you love to dance. All of these talents can be expressed through Second Life, and turn into Lindens! For example, you can host your own shows to sing or play music through voice. You can play for tips! As a painter or illustrator, you can upload pictures or copies to sell as well. (Be mindful of Linden Lab’s policy on what you upload.) And if you love to dance, you can choreograph a set of animations for your avatar and record them to play along with music – a real recital in second life! Acting can be done in just the same way. These are just a few examples, the possibilities are truly unlimited and you can make money from all of them!

Open a store!

If you have a talent for texturing or 3D modeling, this is the best way to make money. Fortunately, if you’re not a master at 3D modeling software, many creators make full permission mesh templates for those who want to make a store. You only have to create a unique texture for your object and can sell it under your own brand! Unique mesh is the best way to go, but for those just getting started, there are plenty of options. And mesh isn’t the only thing you can sell. Skins, scripts, and even nail polish are some examples of non mesh things to create a store around.

Resell Gachas

If gachas are your addiction, there’s hope for you yet. The objective is to get into popular Gacha events such as The Arcade and Epiphany when the event first opens (within the first 48 hours is best). If you have a feel for which objects will be most popular, pull for them and start collecting your inventory. You can rent a booth at popular gacha malls to set out your items at a higher rate, or you can put them on the Second Life Marketplace. If you set them out early, you’ll be able to make more Lindens because demand will be high. After a while your items will be harder to sell, but you can still make a profit with each event! All it takes is a little investment and time.

Photography

Everyone needs a good profile picture, and not everyone knows how to make them! If this is something you are good at, you can commission your work for Lindens. Start by creating a portfolio of your photographs from Second Life on flickr.com. Then you’ll have something to show the people who you’re advertising to. You can either use windlights to manipulate photography within second life, or export your photo and paint on top of it for a more advanced look. Both are in high demand and can bring in good money!

Create an Experience

If you’ve had an idea for a theme park, haunted house, game, club, or interactive story, its likely that this will be a popular attraction for others. This of course takes a lot of planning, investment, and tools to create. It is something that many users have worked for years to achieve! But people like Bryn Oh and Madpea Games have been successful at creating widely popular attractions that bring in lots of money through admission and donations. If its your dream to be a storyteller or an attraction owner, Second Life may offer the outlet you’ve been waiting for.

DJ or Host

Clubs are popular hangout spots in Second Life – perhaps the most popular! Clubs need good music for people to enjoy the atmosphere, and hosts to engage the group and keep conversation flowing! DJs require a bit more technical skill and a good knowledge of music that people enjoy to be successful. If you think you’d be good at streaming music, there are plenty of opportunities. And always openings for hosts! Inquire at your favorite club about positions they might have, and look around at lesser known clubs to build up your resume.

Rent your Land

While a big initial investment, buying and renting land has been a popular way of making money in Second Life from the very beginning. If you acquire a sim from Zoha, the best way to do this is to create a beautiful Sim that people want to live in. This can be a neighborhood, a town, or even a tropical beach with a number of cabanas! You can set rent at an increased price since you are offering a fully landscaped sim, perhaps with a structure already in place. Create enough rentals that it adds up to a profitable income, but not enough that your tenants feel crowded. The more real estate you can offer them, the more interest you’ll have. While it takes time and effort to keep your tenants happy, you will be able to make a profit each month.

Decorate or Landscape

If you’ve got a large inventory and a knack for making it all look good, then people will pay good money to have you decorate their spaces for them. You’ll want to have a collection of items with the ‘copy’ permission, so you can place one on their land without losing it from your inventory completely. Many decorators charge by the size of the space they’re decorating, or how many prims they are expected to put down. If you keep a photographic portfolio of all of your clients, soon your book will be full and the Lindens will come rolling in!

Event Planner

A Second Life event planner does exactly the same things as a real life event planner would. Your clientele include people planning weddings, birthdays, baby showers, galas, and other events or surprises! Its your job to pick the venue, make sure its decorated and that everything from the music, to the ceremony steps, to the invites are taken care of and ready to go. This can be a big job, so its a great way to make money if you are good at organization! However at some point you may need a staff, so this can become a real business if that’s what you are looking for!

Making money in Second Life can be as simple as choosing what you’re good at and using Second Life as an outlet to explore things you want to be good at. Ask youself, if I could do anything in the real world as a job, what would it be? Maybe there is an opportunity in Second Life, and maybe you’ll make something Second Life has never seen before!

Good Luck!

Feed a Smile – Millions of Lindens Raised to Support Kenyan Charity

Second Life has long been a place for fundraising for charities of all kinds. From dances and events to auctions and shops, where there is commerce, there is fundraising.

The charity big on the radar this month is Feed a Smile, much due to the efforts of Madpea’s International Food Fair which is attempting to raise a whopping 9,879,000Ls ( or 37,000 USD) in order to build a kitchen in Nakuru, Kenya.

Don’t be thrown off by the big price tag. The Feed a Smile organization asks only for a donation of 100L – which can feed a child!

This short video demonstrates exactly where donations to this charity go. Directly, and immediately to this community. Why is it important? Why here? The video describes some of the dangerous circumstances that children in Kenya are managing each day. The most impact we can make is through creating access to food – while buying food in Second Life!

The Madpea International Food Fair goes on until March 4th and features some amazing designers. 50% of proceeds go to Feed a Smile. Check it out while its still open!

Feed a Smile is not new to Second Life. The Feed a Smile sim has been open since 2012. Madpea has had other fundraisers of the sort, including a ‘Celebrity Auction’ in 2014 covered on a Draxfiles World Makers episode.

Second Life is truly a connecting force, bringing us together as a human race to make a difference for those who need it, no matter how much or little we can give or where we live.

So what are you waiting for? Stop by the Feed a Smile sim and learn how you can get involved to help see this kitchen come to life!

Not sold on Sansar? 10 Reasons to Keep an Open Heart

This week some very lucky creators from Second Life were given exclusive beta access to the new Sansar Platform. Due to some hefty NDAs, we won’t be able to see yet whats in store.

Its important to understand that Sansar is not out to replace Second Life, it will be entirely different and mainly targeted toward creators and people who want to experience their creations. Second Life will remain alive and active, and its expected that Sansar users may be a demographic that were never a user of Second Life at all, not switching from Second Life. So try not to be too mad at this ‘younger sibling’ of just yet. In fact, while we believe it will serve entirely different purposes than SL – we do hope it will learn quite a bit from what SL has managed to achieve.

If you’re still not excited about the future that is fast upon us, here are some reasons why we think you may want to at least keep an open heart:

*We have not been in Sansar nor do we have definitive indication that these ‘theories’ are true.

1. Better Graphics Capabilities : Simple as that, Sansar will have more powerful graphics with less load on your system. You’ll still want to make sure your computer is up to speed, but we’re expecting a lot less crashing!

2. Higher Sim Capacities : If you’re as frustrated as I am with retrying over and over again to get into new events, then this will be a sigh of relief. Sansar may be able to host significantly more avatars – potentially unlimited? – at any given time. No more waiting in line!

3. Your own website : If you own land with an experience or business that you’d like others to visit, Sansar will have the ability to easily set up a website for you. This is primarily so that people who aren’t already users of Sansar kind find what you’ve created and create an account to experience it. It will be great for advertising to your fans as well!

4. Better Connectivity : Its still ambiguous how this will be achieved, but Linden Labs has acknowledged that its difficult to find communities to become a part of in Second Life. Will we have better chances of making friends and connections in Sansar? Would be interesting!

5. Virtual Reality : While its not yet become mainstream technology, Sansar will be fully equipped to handle virtual reality headsets of all kinds. Have you ever wanted to really BE in the place your avatar is at? Feel closer to the people around you? As the price of headsets lower, this will become a reality. A virtual one.

6. Mobile Compatibility : Mobile Apps for Second Life communication are wonky and can be a bit difficult to use. Sansar will be built with mobile usage in mind, meaning you’ll be able to experience your world with much more immersion than just text while on the go.

7. Lower Land Prices : Linden Labs is well aware that its extremely difficult for the vast majority of users to pay hundreds of dollars for their own private place to rez. Speculation has it that ‘sims’ in Sansar could be as low as $10/month. The capabilities of these parcels is still unknown.

8. Easier Shopping & Inventory Management : While a speculation, many other platforms have paved the way in making this experience easy and slick. Imagine a marketplace like the one we know an love, but in world. Imagine trying on clothing with one click – or already seeing an image of your avatar wearing it before you buy it. Imagine – stay with me – an inventory that is automatically organized for you, and images of your clothing so you know exactly what you’re about to put on. Speculation, but possible with this new platform.

9. Code Compatibility : You may not know that Second Life scripts are made up of their very own coding language – Linden Scripting Language. Its pretty amazing for a platform to work off of its very own syntax! However this does close a lot of doors and makes some of the great coders of the world very uninterested in creating for Second Life. Sansar will be scripted in C#, a well known and loved language that top scripters are well versed in – meaning we’ll see a lot more great stuff with a much higher capability popping up.

10. Physics : Imagine your avatar reaching down and picking up a box. Using their fingers to grab it and lift it into the air. Now imagine dropping that box onto another box. It falls through the air and lands on top of the box with a wiggle. Not falling through, but sitting right where you put it. Now imagine swinging your arm and hitting the boxes, watching them tumble over one another onto the ground. This type of physics engine just may be possible in Sansar.

I’ve loved Second Life for 8+ years and plan on keeping it that way, but I can’t help but being excited about the possibilities of new technology in virtual worlds. Keep an open mind, and don’t be afraid of losing the strong community that we’ve built. Second Life will keep going strong!
